In spite of its bad reputation for crime, South Africa is well worth a visit. Most people just visit Cape Town and the Kruger National Park, but the Karoo and eastern Free State have their charms too. In my opinion, Durban has become a bit of a slum, so I don't enjoy it as much as I once did.
England is still high on the list of favourite travel destinations. London is great, although
you'll rarely hear an English accent in the West End, let alone a Cockney accent.
You may even hear shop assistants in famous stores chatting to each other in very un-English
languages, sometimes French. The most popular destination is the London Eye. However, you
are only at the apex of the wheel for a moment, and the queue is bizarre and complicated.
Remember where you put your ticket even after you think that it has been checked. The
queue is so weird that they have to check it more than once.
Many people don't want to travel to the USA nowadays, on account of that country's record
in Iraq and Kosovo, because the Supreme Court ruled that prisoners in Guantanamo Bay do not
have the same human rights as American citizens, and because of the draconian privacy
violations against visitors to the USA. However, if you can bring yourself to overlook those
problems, I can particularly recommend Los Angeles, the Grand Canyon and New Orleans. The rest
is a bit boring in my opinion. Canada has a lot to offer, however, and Vancouver, as
well as the Banff and Jasper National Parks, are a must see.
India is a must, of course. The Taj Mahal is the most famous site. However, the crowds are
huge. That famous photograph of the Princess of Wales sitting alone and sad in front of the
monument was carefully staged.
Iceland is famous for whale watching and hidden people. However, although the iceland is
sparsely populated (US servicemen confined to their bases are said to outnumber Icelanders),
Iceland has been an ecological disaster area for centuries. At one time, a third of the
island was covered by indigenous forest. However, although people are few, sheep were
numerous enough to entirely destroy the forest by killing seedlings. If you do decide to
go, make sure that you have a thick wallet.
Argentina at its best was a wonderful place: Buenos Aires, the Pampas, Bariloche and the
Iguassu Falls. However, they are sniffing after the Falkland Islands again, so that doesn't
bode well for the future. There is no way that the British are going to give over the
thousands of citizens whose ancestors have lived in the Falklands since the early 19th
century. For Argentina to expect them to do so, to avenge an insult of long ago, is
absurd. Besides, if Argentinians believe that they have a right to the Falklands because
they once belonged to Spain, they should remember that their ancestors stole Argentina from
indigenous peoples who are still not quite extinct.
